Inspiration for Creating Room Designs

At Hot Pink Angels, our interior design clients regularly ask "How do you know where to start with ideas for creating room designs?"

If you are looking for inspiration for planning a new decorating scheme, then check out some of our top tips below!

1) ASSESS YOUR ROOM
Firstly, it is important to assess your room. Natural light levels and room size and proportion will help determine any boundaries you have in decorating. For example, it is best to avoid dark colours if you have poor natural light, and avoid big bold patterns in a small room.

2) ASSESS YOUR NEEDS
You also need to ask yourself what you need from this particular room. For example, what storage requirements do you have, is this a relaxing family room or an entertaining space, etc. This will help you focus on the furnishings and fixtures that you need for the space.

3) ASSESS FEATURES THAT NEED TO STAY!
Expensive carpet that you want to keep? Original period fireplace? Cream bathroom suite that you need to work with? With any room it's usually the case that various features will have to stay put, whether through budgetary constraints or simply personal choice. It is rare to have a completely blank canvas to work with, so make sure you take into consideration existing features that need to work alongside your planned new scheme.

4) ASSESS YOUR PROPERTY
Another key feature you need to consider is the type of property you have, whether this be a contemporary open-plan apartment, a Georgian townhouse or a country cottage. There is of course no reason why you can't mix contemporary decorating styles with properties from different eras, for example. But you should try to be aware of the type of property you have and think of how well your decorating style will blend with it. For example, there is no reason why a perod property can't have a more contemporary look, but it would still be important to be sympathetic to the style of the property, and to tastefully highlight and incorporate original features into the more modern look.

5) ASSESS YOUR STYLE
You also need to think about your own personal decorating style. Of course, as above, it is important to consider the type of property you have, but are you more taken with a modern, designer look, or do you feel more comfortable with a traditional, period look? Do you have simple, minimalist tastes, or do you love an eclectic feel? Do you have strong colour preferences or do you prefer a simple palate of creams and whites? These are the sorts of questions that you need to answer honestly if you are to create a scheme that you will feel happy living with.

6) DO YOUR RESEARCH
There is a wealth of information and pictures available on interiors websites and in home interior magazines. Have a good browse through resources like these for inspiration and ideas. A good tip is to cut out and keep photos of styles and ideas that appeal to you, as you can then refer back to these as you narrow down your own choices.

7) BUDGET
Another important part of creating any design scheme is to set a realistic budget for your design work. Gorgeous room designs can be created on any budget, but being realistic in the first place as to your spending limit will help guide you through the mass of options that are available.

8) MOOD BOARDS
Once you have narrowed down your options, and really thought hard about and researched the decorating style that you'd like for your room, then another great tip is to create a mood board to illustrate your design scheme. Simply collect samples of the paint, wallpaper, and fabric that you love, cut out pictures of furniture, accessories, and room designs that you hanker after, and arrange them all together on a large piece of card. Putting all the pieces of a scheme together on paper like this before you start buying can really help you visualise the finished product!
