"I wanted to write and say how pleased we are with our new lounge curtains. They have transformed the look of the room and are so well made. An upholsterer who visited also remarked on the professional making up. Thank you also for the help you provided in choosing what has turned out to be the correct colour!"
Mrs C Moon, Darlington

"Many thanks for your wonderful design. The painting is done and work is coming on steadily – the house is looking much fresher already!”

  Before

This room was a brand new extension to our client's home. Our brief was to create a beautiful, warm, stunning dining area, working around our client's existing furniture, as shown:

After

As can be seen below, we opted for a colour scheme of pale yellows & golds, enhanced with touches of burnt orange to create a warm, rich feel. These tones brought the beautiful mahogany furniture to life. The look is finished with gorgeous, custom made, luxurious curtains to enhance the view to the landscaped gardens outside.

Before

This client's sitting room was looking a little tired & dated. Our brief here was to create a fresh, light feel, to give the room a new lease of life.

After

We opted for a fresh, light colour colour scheme of pale greens, white & cream, which really lifted & revitalised the room. A green feature wall adds interest to scheme, & the green theme is carried throughout the room in gorgeous accessories. The real focal point to the room is the fabric used in the curtains & cushions - a dramatic bold flower print, from our Mitsuki range by Nono. Note also the gorgeous raffia tiebacks, available from our website!

 Before

The brief here was to bring some life to an empty house that our client had on the market.

After

We dressed the room with furniture and accessories, opting for neutral tones so as to appeal to as wide a market as possible. A particularly beautiful feature of this room was the many windows, which we highlighted with gorgeous, shimmering gold silk curtains - the perfect luxurious finishing touch!

 Before

This client was struggling for ideas as to how to decorate their bland downstairs cloakroom.

After

We transformed the look of the room by opting for a cool contemporary colour scheme of white, grey & chrome. We gave the bathroom a sleek feel by replacing the existing radiator with a chrome towel rail and installing a wall-mounted sink, hiding all the messy pipework in the wall behind. Feature wallpaper & gorgeous stainless steel tiles complete the look!

"Jennifer On Call

As a busy anaesthetist Dr Veena Sarma didn't have the time to re-vamp her home. So she called in an interior specialist to do the house doctoring for her.

The catalyst for a thorough home makeover in the Sarma household in Norton was a huge, airy extension to the rear of their 70s-built detached house.

It more than doubled the space downstairs, but it left Dr Veena Sarma, an anaesthetist at North Tees and Hartlepool Hospital, with a real headache when it came to creating a 'look' for the space.

The new light rooms cried out for some tlc and decorating direction but Dr Sarma was stuck. Her son, Kidambi, also a doctor, was urging her to modernise the family home and give it a new lease of life.

Cue Jennifer Harrison. Just what the house doctor ordered. Jennifer runs her own shop and interior design studio, Hot Pink Angels, in the North Yorkshire market town of Helmsley.

She's got a degree in Psychology and specialised in environmental psycholoy - how the environment affects the individual - and has combined this expertise with a second interest, interior design, developing the interest with study and an interior design diploma.

When the Sarma family called Jennifer in it was just as the extension was being finished. Two rear rooms has been added with windows over the garden and a 'snug' had been created between the hall and the kitchen.

But the Sarmas were prepared, albeit apprehensively, to put the whole house in Jennifer's hands and asked her to create a new look which also took in the existing sitting room, hallway and a family room downstairs.

"I admit I was a bit worried because I knew I did not want the house to look like a showroom, I wanted the new look to be based around my things and things that were personal to the family and meant something.

"It is very hard to visualise how something will look in the end when you only have pieces of fabric and paint swatches but now I am delighted by the way it has turned out."

For Jennifer it was a case, as with any client, of listening and working with them.

So while some rooms have had a no-holds-barred-approach with brand new furniture, others, namely the dining room and main sitting room, have been planned to suit the family's existing furniture.

In the hallway an oak laminate floor was installed and two side console tables frame the front door with cream and green curtains framing the hallway and adding a sense of arrival. Walls are kept neutral throughout and the harmonious colours of flooring and carpet also give a sense of continuity in the ground floor, there are no jarring colours or changes.

Jennifer is especially fond of a company called Nono which designs and manufactures unusual fabrics and wallpapers.

Dr Sarma adds: "I am sure Jennifer would have liked to do something more daring or contemporary in some of the areas but I wanted to keep an essence of the house and our family...she was very patient but also guided me through the choices so well. It can be very daunting to change something and it would have been easy to just go out and buy ready-made curtains or new wallpaper but professional help has made such a difference."

In the new extension rooms overlooking the garden, Jennifer mixed browns and light blue for a restful but stylish look. New leather sofas complete the look and again, curtains are used to bring the look together.

Dr Sarma estimates the 'new look' has cost in the region of £15,000 and has taken about two years in total.

"Some people want it done now and others will work through it slowly," says Jennifer.

"The main thing is to get the personality of the house in tune with the people who are living there, " she adds.
